With the MotoGP Championship heading to Aragon this weekend, we look back through the race archives for three iconic races that had us on the edge of our seats.
Beginning with the 2018 GP that saw Jorge Lorenzo drop out of the race on the very first corner after starting on the front row. This lead to a battle between Marc Marquez and Andrea Dovizioso that saw the pair change position multiple times, eventually allowing Andrea Iannone to catch the pair and join the battle.
The second iconic moment features Aleix Espargaro in the 2014 MotoGP where he picked up his first ever podium riding the open class bike. This Open sub-category existed from 2012 – 2016 and featured independent teams running on Superbike technology. It was a supreme ride from Espargaro, suffering a misfortune at the beginning of the race and then battling his way back to the front.
The final iconic moment that had us chewing our fingernails was back in 2011, when Casey Stoner became the only rider to win in Aragon on two different bikes.
What’s in store this year? Hopefully we will see another battle between the top riders that will leave us on the edge of our seats.

Created in 2001, Red Bull X-Fighters has grown to become the biggest and most respected freestyle motocross event on the planet, featuring the world’s best riders throwing down mad tricks in stunning locations around the globe. After eight spectacular years of the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour, in 2016 the series refocused on one season highlight event at the legendary Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas in Madrid, and did the same in 2017. The Red Bull X-Fighters Event in Madrid, which took place on on July 7, marked the 16th straight year that the world famous bullring hosted FMX’s signature event, where the world’s best riders have been pushing the envelope with new and exciting tricks since 2002.

Jerez steps in to host 2023 World Superbike season finale | World Superbikes

The Spanish track – which has hosted 21 WorldSBK races, the most recent in September 2021 – will hold the 12th round of this year’s campaign on October 27th-29th.

“We are delighted to bring the WorldSBK championship back to its roots at the legendary Circuito de Jerez – Angel Nieto for the final round of the 2023 season,” said WorldSBK Executive Director Gregorio Lavilla.

“Jerez holds a special place in the history of our sport, and it is only fitting that we conclude this remarkable season at a venue with such rich heritage. We look forward to witnessing the fierce competition and celebrating the sport’s legacy with the passionate fans in Andalusia.”

Mayor, Jerez de la Frontera, María José García Pelayo, added: “It represents a great opportunity for Jerez and for the Circuit to see the return of WorldSBK. Jerez is once again positioning itself as a world motorcycling reference, as an emblematic circuit for riders, teams, and fans.

“A circuit that, with the return of WorldSBK, begins a new period of momentum. Hosting the round initially planned in Argentina at Jerez is a milestone, thanks to the collaboration of the City Council, the Junta de Andalusia, and Dorna.

“All three parties are aware that Jerez is an icon for world motorcycling, and that all the major motor racing events must go through the Circuito de Jerez.”

Jerez is also the venue for the official Spanish MotoGP round.

Spanish star Alvaro Bautista, the reigning World Superbike champion, currently holds a 74-point title lead over nearest rival Toprak Razgatlioglu.

In this week’s MotoGP Inside Pass episode, Vanessa heads back to Valencia once again for the second race at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo.

Pedro Acosta has won the 2020 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup and as a special treat, Vanessa has arranged for Brad Binder to answer some of Pedro’s questions about moving up from the Rookies Cup to Moto3. We wish Pedro the best of luck in 2021 for his rookie Moto3 season.

Back in the paddock, Vanessa catches up with a bunch on riders and plays a fun game of heads up! This one is funny, do you think you could have done a better job than the riders? Sign language is *not* easy.

The TV compound isn’t somewhere you would normally get to see, but check this out, Vanessa takes us inside and discovered what goes on behind the screen to bring us the live images of the racing.

Lorenzo: “Risky” leaving Yamaha, but knew Dall’Igna “would do it at Ducati” | MotoGP

Lorenzo had spent his entire nine-year MotoGP career with Yamaha, winning three world titles and 44 races.

Meanwhile, Dall’Igna, who had worked with Lorenzo while heading the Aprilia racing department in the 125GP and 250GP classes, arrived at the struggling Ducati team at the end of 2013.

But it took until 2016 for Ducati to finally win its first race since Casey Stoner’s departure.

“I made a very risky bet, at the time, going from Yamaha where I was winning a lot… To Ducati, who never won [the title] apart from 2007 with Casey Stoner,” Lorenzo told MotoGP.com.

“But I really knew that Gigi Dall’Igna finally would do it. That’s why I made this bet. And that’s what happened.

“Dall’Igna? Everything he started, he accomplished his dream and his target.

“More or less, I knew this would happen.”

Unfortunately for Lorenzo and Ducati, the start of his own race-winning success on the Desmosedici came too late, midway through his second season – after he had already signed to join Repsol Honda for 2019.

While Lorenzo’s team-mate Andrea Dovizioso finished title runner-up from 2017-2019, it was another Italian, Francesco Bagnaia, who finally handed Dall’Igna the premier-class crown.

“It’s a pity it didn’t happen when I was there in the team. This is a real pity,” Lorenzo said.

Lorenzo retired from MotoGP after a punishing debut season on the Honda RC213V.

Jerez MotoGP Test: New Honda aero: No ‘big steps, a little disappointing’ | MotoGP

Some of the latest aero had been used by HRC wild-card Stefan Bradl during the Spanish MotoGP weekend, but Rins and Nakagami felt no clear benefit from the various combinations tested.

“We did many different configurations with the wings, about the aero, and honestly, we tried like five sets of different packages. Like front, side, swingarm, and all these things. And more or less the feeling was very similar,” said Rins.

“Some wings turn a little bit better, the others have like better stability on brakes, but in the end, we make the back-to-back with the standard one, and the lap time is very similar.

“Unluckily I had a crash in the last minutes with the soft tyre, and I couldn’t improve the lap time. Let’s see for Le Mans if we can use something. “

Nakagami agreed: “We tested some aero packages as planned, but honestly, at the end we went back to standard. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any big steps.

“So it’s a little bit disappointing about the performance. Because I expected… this is a really important test and also from outside [the new aero] is a different shape, so I believed something big changed, because now the aero is one of the big things to change the bike.

“But the performance, not so much changes. And we are still missing edge grip, rear grip, and with some aero, less turning, so even worse. “

Rins (+1.148s), who endured a tough Jerez weekend after the victory highs of COTA, salvaging 13th in the Sprint, was 17th fastest at the test.

Nakagami, who finished ninth in the main grand prix, was twelfth (+0.740s).

Only Bradl and, very briefly, Repsol Honda’s Joan Mir got to try the new Kalex frame at the test.

However, unlike engine and fairing developments, there are no restrictions on trying chassis updates during a grand prix weekend.

Dani Pedrosa: “Crazy” weekend! Another wild-card? “We’ll get the information together…” | MotoGP

But the Spaniard, who retired as a full-time racer at the end of 2018, always insisted the weekend was about aiding his KTM test riding duties.

As such, and although each MotoGP manufacturer is allowed three wild-card entries per season, Pedrosa made clear he will only return if he and KTM think it will be useful to the project.

“We will go back home and try to get all the information together, mix it with my feelings and my comments and see what topics of information we’ve got and then see what we can plan,” said the 37-year-old, whose only previous wild-card was at Austria 2021, when he finished tenth.

Pedrosa’s main goals for the Spanish event were to fill in gaps in his own testing knowledge, as well as race-developing some new parts, such as aero.

The 31-time premier-class winner (for Honda) wanted to experience the revised race weekend format and new Sprint race first-hand, as well as trying time attacks, an increasingly crucial part of a MotoGP weekend but rarely available to test riders due to the limitation on test tyres.

Pedrosa was also curious to understand how the RC16 works in a group situation, in a race, against rival machines.

“Yes [it was useful], I did follow a few different bikes over these days,” Pedrosa said.

Full-time KTM riders Brad Binder and Jack Miller excelled in the Spanish Grand Prix battles, passing almost at will on the brakes as they took podium finishes in both races, including a Sprint win.

Pedrosa was quick to credit the Binder and Miller for setting up their bikes to fight in such a way, pointing out that it’s not an area he can work on when riding alone in private tests.

“Really for the battle… It’s something Brad, Jack and their team did, that they developed some sort of feeling and setting that allows them to fight,” Pedrosa said.

“I cannot set up the bike for overtakes [in testing], I can just set up the bike for good braking, good turning, good corner speed and so on. But I cannot simulate any racing moments.

“From what we saw, they look really nice and aggressive and they control the bike and that’s something very important.”

New format ‘more crazy’ than Pedrosa expected

Turning to the intensity of the new weekend format, Pedrosa warned it could be hard for full-time riders to “keep young and fresh season by season”.

Although Kazakhstan has been dropped, the 2023 calendar is still set to feature 40 races due to the introduction of the Sprints.

Practice has been cut to make time for the Saturday afternoon race, with the top ten riders after Friday now being given direct access to Q, with qualifying moved to Saturday morning.

“It’s absolutely more crazy, big time, because not only the Sprint but the format pushes you so hard from Practice 1,” Pedrosa said.

“That, plus more races, plus more aggressiveness, at the end of the year I don’t know how the riders will be.

“But for sure over a lifetime, maybe it’s going to be more difficult to keep yourself young and fresh season by season.

“I’m saying this from my point of view, I’m already older, I’m not 20 anymore with that fresh energy.

“But I just hope that somehow they find the good compromise, at least in the races, so they don’t get injured so often. Because so far it’s been a little too much.”
