Glenn Irwin doubled up after a push through from eighth on the grid to hit the front for the last lap and defend to the finish to take race two of round eight with one of the best performances of his BSB career at Cadwell Park on Bank Holiday Monday.

Irwin had work to do and both he and his BeerMonster Ducati teammate Tommy Bridewell made little progress on the opening laps. By lap seven the Northern Irish rider had only gained one position, rising to fifth by lap nine as he and Jason O’Halloran looked to join the lead group.

Once in touch his braking and skill shone, aware of Kyle Ryde taking over at the front and stretching the group apart, a series of brave overtakes moved the #2 ever forward to keep hopes of a win alive.

Ryde still lead at the end of the penultimate lap, with Irwin sat in behind and ready to pull off his race winning move – ahead at Coppice he blocked and at the narrow Lincolnshire track, making passing tricky, he used the Ducati’s power to pull in front through the section where the Yamaha typically runs better.

Irwin kept his nerve and lead all the way to the chequered flag to lead over the line by 0.468s for his sixth win of the season and second of the weekend, leaving him on course for a treble in race three.

Ryde was reasonably happy with second. The LAMI OMG rider had issues from lap eight, but was able to ride around them in the lead group. Cadwell Park is not a track favoured by the Yamaha rider so second was a strong result, like Irwin, finishing in the same position as he did in the sprint after his hard work out front.

O’Halloran moves though for third

Jason O’Halloran had his own late burst to pick up the final podium spot. Starting sixth, like the Ducati riders behind him he made little progress in the opening laps and dropped to seventh by lap seven as Irwin passed him.

Sticking with the BeerMonster bike, he too came through on the McAMS Yamaha, with the duo soon in a clear fourth and fifth and chasing down the then lead trio of Leon Haslam, Lee Jackson and Kyle Ryde.

Lap sixteen saw the Australian still stuck in fifth as Irwin made his break for the podium places, but a big move on Haslam, followed by a forceful lunge on Jackson at the hairpin, which pushed the Kawasaki onto the grass, saw him collect third at the line.

Haslam was on pole, having been incredibly fast before bike issues took him out of race one, when he was running in the lead group. Again fast and in amongst the frontrunners, and at one point the race leader after Ryan Vickers fell from the lead, it wasn’t until the closing laps of the race where he was shuffled out of contention for the rostrum, bringing home his Rokit BMW Motorrad in fourth.

Lee Jackson also missed out, moved down to sixth as the race drew to a close thanks to a late push from championship leader Tommy Bridewell on the second PBM bike, stealing away fifth late in the race.

Christian Iddon was seventh – he received two time penalties to be added for cutting the corner at turn 9/10 in the race on his Oxford Products Ducati.

Josh Brookes made up the six places in the race, bettered only by race winner Irwin, from 14th on the grid to finish right behind Iddon in eighth for FHO Racing BMW Motorrad.

Storm Stacey had run with the lead group for much of the race distance on his Starline Racing Kawasaki before fading to ninth as the last of that group on track.

Tom Neave was a distant tenth for Honda Racing UK, in turn enjoying his own gap over Lee Hardy Racing’s Bradley Perie in eleventh. Franco Bourne was right on his rear wheel in eleventh on the second Honda Racing entry, with Luke Mossey (Tactix by Lloyd & Jones BMW) pressuring him from behind, having to settle for 13th.

Only fifteen riders finished the race, so the remaining points went to Jack Scott (Rapid CDH Racing Kawasaki) and Hector Barbera (TAG Racing Honda).

Crashes and Injuries and replacements

The biggest fall in terms of the race was Ryan Vickers from the lead, by then Louis Valleley had exited on his birthday and Peter Hickman had already pulled into the pits.

Luke Stapleford deputised for Dean Harrison (at the Manx Grand Prix) for DAO Racing but was another rider picking up a DNF in race two.

Charlie Nesbitt parked up at Park with bike issues, while the also already injured Jack Kennedy was the last to exit with two laps remaining, from a top ten finish.

Max Cook and Danny Buchan were both withdrawn by their teams following earlier crashes, while Josh Owens and Andrew Irwin remain out of action due to their longer term injuries.

Tito Rabat has split with McAMS Yamaha after his stint on the second bike. Danny Kent is also absent as the team looks to be back financially at the next round after his crash at Thruxton.

Where does that leave the championship?

Tommy Bridewell’s lead was cut further after another win for his teammate and rival, Glenn Irwin. The #46 now has 285, with Irwin moving onto 272.5, now just 12.5 points away from taking over at the top.

Ryde is third overall on 240 after another podium finish, with Jason O’Halloran on 238.5 in fourth. Leon Haslam remains fifth on 213.

Tommy Bridewell put it all on the line to get his bike issues behind him and a trophy in front as he prevented triple trouble with victory over his teammate Glenn Irwin in the final race of round eight at Cadwell Park.

The duo had work to do on the grid again from row three, with Irwin first into the front group mix and holding the lead as Bridewell dug deep to protect his championship charge.

The run out of Charlies 2 into Park had become the most likely overtaking point for most riders at the narrow, hard to pass track. Bridewell put his move on Irwin there on lap sixteen, then pushed to the limit to try to hold on out front for the last two laps.

The BeerMonster Ducati rider set the fastest lap of the race to take over out front and initially pulled out a small gap, but the #2 responded and was right behind for a gripping finale.

On the final lap, the gap helped at Charlie’s as Irwin was too far away to reply, Bridewell blocked and held at the bus stop chicane, leaving just the hairpin.

Irwin was close – but not close enough – the #46 was a picture of relief to pick up a win, leading over the line by just 0.057s.

Leon Haslam was back on pole but lost out on the first lap after a massive start from Storm Stacey. The Rokit BMW rider was soon back in front, but with a sizeable lead group, which saw Kyle Ryde take over for a spell before the Ducati duo came into play, there was little advantage to be had.

Haslam held off a late lunge for the final rostrum slot from Ryde to complete the podium.

The LAMI OMG rider was fourth, unsighted by Haslam ahead in the final moments, saving what looked like a sure flip of his bike, running over the grass in the run to the line.

Leon Jackson was once again the top Kawasaki for Cheshire Mouldings in the final BSB race at his home round, close behind in fifth.

Jason O’Halloran ended up a lonely in sixth for McAMS Yamaha, clear of the next pair on track.

That battle was won by Christian Iddon for another seventh on the Oxford Products Ducati, just ahead of Josh Brookes, who again placed eighth for FHO Racing BMW Motorrad.

Early leader Stacey dropped to ninth on his Starline Kawasaki, but was thirteen seconds clear of Peter Hickman, who completed the top ten on the second FHO Racing bike.

Once again there were only fifteen finishers, so everybody who took the chequered flag gained points.

Bradley Perie was a distant eleventh, almost ten seconds behind Hickman for Lee Hardy Racing Kawasaki. There was a further wait for Franco Bourne to claim twelfth who has gone one place better at every race this meet, with every result being a new best for Andrew Irwin’s replacement at Honda Racing UK.

Jack Scott (Rapid CDH Racing Kawasaki) placed 13th, Luke Stapleford was 14th, with Hector Barbera again collecting the final point for TAG Racing.

Delight to disaster for Nesbitt

After three podiums at home in Thruxton rookie Charlie Nesbitt arrived at Cadwell Park on a high, but the round eight BSB meeting could not have been more different for the MasterMac Honda by Hawk Racing rider.

A huge crash in FP4 brought out the red flag and saw Nesbitt on crutches in the paddock.

That lead to him missing qualifying, but being placed last in the Q2 session as he was already through on his FP2 time.

That is where Nesbitt’s luck ran out – a fall ot the hairpin ended his sprint race. Bike issues saw him pull up at Park in race two.

This time, Nesbitt had woes before the race had even started, with his bike being worked on in the Hawk Racing garage on the warm-up lap, leading to a pit lane start for the rookie.

The #86 rider was able to work his way into the points but was off his bike again near the Mountain on lap seven, completing a trio of DNF’s

Crashes and Injuries and replacements

Luke Stapleford in 14th was sitting in for Dean Harrison (who is at the Manx Grand Prix) for DAO Racing.

After providing some of the most spectacular launches over the Mountain this weekend, Ryan Vickers was ruled out of race three after his race two crash. Jack Kennedy was also out of action. They joined Max Cook and Danny Buchan (withdrawn by teams after earlier crashes) and the already recovering Josh Owens and Andrew Irwin on the sidelines.

There was no Tito Rabat following the end of his time with McAMS Yamaha. Danny Kent missed the round after his Thruxton fall proved costly in more ways than one.

Where does that leave the championship?

A valuable win sees Tommy Bridewell end Cadwell Park with a total of 303. The gap back to Glenn Irwin increased slightly with his statement win, now at 14.5 points.

Kyle Ryde sits third on 252, with Jason O’Halloran fourth on 248.5. Leon Haslam and his own BMW entry still hold fifth after his podium finish, now on a closer 227.

Glenn Irwin hit the front and proved hard to pass in the short twelve lap sprint as he won the first race of round eight at Cadwell Park over the Bank Holiday weekend.

With an eye on the sky as the rain threatened to return and have a say in the sprint, it was Ryan Vickers who got the holeshot from pole, but by Park Irwin had found a way to the front on lap one.

Leading the largest share of the laps, there was permanent pressure from the LAMI OMG Yamaha pair of Vickers and Kyle Ryde. The #7 did find a way past – a move on lap nine, again through Park as the Ducati went a little wide saw him ahead briefly before Irwin capitalised on the Ducati’s strength – power – as soon as they hit the straight to pull ahead once again.

From there Irwin kept a tight, clean line to ensure there was no way around his BeerMonster bike, bringing his #2 bike home first for victory in his 200th race start. It is the Northern Irish rider’s first win since the Knockhill meet.

Yamahas duel it out to complete podium

Behind Vickers was in a spot – wanting to push and put on a move on Irwin for the lead, while knowing that could open the door for the rider behind, his teammate Ryde, to do the same to him.

A misunderstanding with his pit board information lead Vickers to believe he had more space behind him than was actually there in reality, so he was surprised when he tried a late lunge on Irwin to find Ryde using the opportunity to instead pass him, also at Park, and claim second – just 0.118s behind Irwin in a close finish between the trio.

Ryde felt he needed to make to make his move as he could sense the rider behind had closed right in, so in turn he was under pressure to ensure he did not lose his podium finish.

That bike behind was the McAMS Yamaha of Jason O’Halloran, who had gotten off to a poor start. Once used to his lap of rear grip he took over at the front of the chasing group and dropped them, to finish a close fourth.

Tommy Bridewell made up two places on his grid spot to limit the damage as his teammate and rival won the Sprint, finishing fifth.

He passed Lee Jackson on lap six for that place, leaving the Cheshire Mouldings rider sixth and once again the top Kawasaki.

Christian Iddon was the last of the group to cross the finish in seventh for Oxford Products Ducati, as Storm Stacey retired late in the race.

Josh Brookes was next to see the chequered flag, eighth after passing his FAO Racing BMW Motorrad team-mate Peter Hickman who was right behind in ninth, in turn holding off Jack Kennedy who was back on track for Mar-Train Yamaha, fighting the pain of his broken rib.

Tom Neave was a distant eleventh for Honda Racing UK, but clear of Bradley Perie who took almost another five seconds to arrive at the finish for Lee Hardy Racing Kawasaki.

The remaining points on offer were picked up by Franco Bourne (Honda Racing UK) in 13th, Jack Scott (Rapid CDH Racing Kawasaki) in 14th and 15th placed Luke Mossey for Tactix by Lloyd & Jones BMW.

‘King of the Mountain’ Danny Buchan got hopes of a Showdown place back in his sights after a double race win on Sunday, with both performances on his SYNETIQ BMW Motorrad bike equally dominant.

Controlling each race from the front the BMW man looked impossible to beat over the Lincolnshire track, with Ray, who set the new pole record on Sunday, proving he too had pace, pushing him all the way.

“A qualifying lap every lap”

Speaking of the first race, where 0.815s to keep Ray at bay the #83 needed to treat every loop like a one lap time attack:

“It was literally like a qualifying lap every lap. I was just taking each lap as it came, you know, I knew once the fuel level dropped I was going to be competitive”.

This was even more true of the second race where, he blitzed ahead, though Ray looked comfortable in second to lead over the line by a sizeable 1.864s, something he was unable to achieve in the first race of the day as it ended under red flag conditions.

The result did no harm to his Showdown charge, his 50 point haul pulling him to just 14 points short of the man currently sitting in eighth place, Kyle Ryde, who was 16th and pointless in race three.

Bradley Ray doubled up on the second places, adding a further 40 points to his overall tally. The Rich Energy OMG Yamaha rider admits his focus is now truly on gaining as many podium point as he can over his rivals for the Showdown

“For me at the moment it’s just about podium credits, it’s a bit of a shame really, when you do all that work for second and you only gain three points back but it’s all about the show down at the moment”.

Ray is one of three riders now confirmed for the showdown to the podium point tally is all important. The #28 gained a big advantage when Jason O’halloran failed to make the podium again today, Ray is now holding just two less than the Australian and takes over the lead in the overall standings at the same time.

“I’m having to just take what’s on offer”

Another rider with points firmly in their thoughts is Tommy Bridewell, Monday’s other double podium finisher. On 201 points in sixth, the Oxford Products Ducati rider should make it comfortably into the showdown but is off the pace he expects as he still cannot get the Ducati to act how he would like:

“I’m not quite at one with the bike to allow me to really experiment with force – I’m having to just take what’s on offer”.

Two thirds sees Bridewell moving in the right direction in the overall standings afrer Cadwell Park – he was eighth coming into the meeting.

“At the end of the day I’m doing the correct thing in beating the vital guys I need to to confirm the Showdown, that’s all I need to do at the minute’.

A third rider was confirmed for the Showdown this weekend with two more fifth places enough to see Cheshire Mouldings FS-3 rider Rory Skinner move into third with enough points to secure a place as he mixes his BSB races with wildcard appearances in Moto2.

His team-mate Lee Jackson was hoping for the same but instead suffered from the crash which brought out the red flag in race one, which lead to him being at the back of the grid and racing through to 14th in race two, only to then have a jump start in the final outing on track. He picked up the Fast Forward award for most places gained.

Yamaha also failed to dominate as they have done for much of the season – aside from Ray who was a rostrum regular, O’Halloran was the best of the rest of their riders in both race two and three finishing eight and ninth ahead of current title holder Tarran Mackenzie, who was eleventh and tenth at circuit he calls a ‘bogey track’.

Championship standings after Cadwell Park:

Ray now leads the way with a total of 372 points and with 46 podium credits. After a lacklustre performance by his own very high standard this season O’Halloran drops to second with two podium points more to his name.

Skinner, moves ahead of Jackson into third with 241 (plus four podium points, Jackson holds 14).

Honda’s Glenn Irwin moves his overall tally onto 214 (16 podium points) while his double podium sees Bridewell climb up to sixth on 201.
